Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
