Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
