Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
