One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
