No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
