British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
