The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
